Blades of Fire: A forged masterpiece in action-adventure
Blades of Fire is a third-person action-adventure game that promises to carve a unique niche in the genre. Drawing inspiration from dark fantasy classics and the studio’s own Severance: Blade of Darkness, this title blends tactical combat, intricate weapon crafting, and a narrative-driven experience, making it a standout for fans of God of War and Soulslike games.
Innovation for the Soulslike games
The game’s most compelling feature is its innovative forging system. Players control Aran de Lira, a warrior who wields a sacred hammer to craft weapons using “Forge Scrolls.” With seven weapon families and over 30 unique scrolls, the system allows near-infinite combinations, letting players customize weapons’ weight, length, durability, and edge quality. A forging minigame adds skill-based depth, though some find it initially complex, requiring practice to master. This attachment to crafted weapons, which can be named and gain reputation, fosters a personal connection rare in the genre.
Combat is another highlight, offering a deliberate, tactical approach reminiscent of a Kurosawa duel. Players can target specific enemy body parts, head or torso, using slashing, stabbing, or blunt attacks, with parrying and blocking mechanics that reward precision. The game’s 50+ enemy types, each with unique weaknesses, demand strategic weapon choices, elevating combat beyond button-mashing.
The dark fantasy world, inspired by Frank Frazetta’s comics and films like Excalibur, is visually striking, with vivid colors and dramatic compositions. The narrative, centered on Aran’s quest against Queen Nerea, who turns steel to stone, is a “dark fairytale” with themes of reunion and revenge, offering player-driven exploration of lore.
Compared to God of War, Blades of Fire shares a third-person perspective, heavy-hitting combat, and a companion (Adso, akin to Atreus). However, its forging system and slower, Soulslike combat pace set it apart, emphasizing customization over God of War’s streamlined progression. While God of War leans on cinematic storytelling, Blades of Fire prioritizes player agency in uncovering its world.
With a 60-70 hour journey, Blades of Fire is shaping up to be a bold, distinctive adventure that forges its own legend. Use our price comparison tool to find the best prices for Blades of Fire.
