Gorgon Halo emerges as AMD’s reported Ryzen AI MAX Strix Halo refresh

AMD’s Halo CPUs are set for a boost with upcoming Gorgon Halo processors

AMD’s recently revealed Ryzen AI 400 series processors, also known by the codename Gorgon Point, continue to use the same core formula as the Ryzen AI 300 lineup. This includes a mix of Zen 5 and Zen 5c CPU cores, RDNA 3.5 integrated graphics, and XDNA 2 NPUs, though with higher clock speeds and broader memory support. According to a new report from VideoCardz, AMD appears to be taking a similar approach with its Ryzen AI MAX 300 series, which is expected to gain a new flagship processor codenamed Gorgon Halo.

The current top-tier chip in this category, the Ryzen AI MAX+ 395 - also known as Strix Halo - is an extremely powerful APU. It features 16 cores, 32 threads, and an integrated Radeon 8060S GPU equipped with 40 RDNA 3.5 compute units. The rumored Gorgon Halo, which is believed to belong to a future Ryzen AI MAX 400 series, is expected to follow the same pattern as Gorgon Point by boosting both CPU and GPU frequencies.

At present, the Radeon 8060S in Strix Halo runs at up to 2.9 GHz. Expectations are that AMD could push this past the 3.0 GHz mark, similar to the GPUs found in the Ryzen AI 9 HX 475 and HX 470, which can reach boost clocks of up to 3.1 GHz.

That said, AMD also introduced two additional Ryzen AI MAX 300 processors at CES - the Ryzen AI MAX+ 392 and 388 - which adds some uncertainty around when Gorgon Halo will actually launch. While Strix Halo has drawn attention as a strong candidate for gaming handhelds and compact PCs, the Ryzen AI MAX+ 388 may prove more affordable, reducing the CPU configuration to 8 cores and 16 threads while still retaining the powerful Radeon 8060S GPU.
