Amazon axes its video game division and will kill New World
Amazon Games’ flagship MMORPG New World: Aeternum appears to be entering its twilight years following a major wave of layoffs at Amazon that heavily impacted its video game division. The company confirmed that Season 10: Nighthaven will be the final major content update for the game, marking the end of active development just three years after its full release. While servers will remain online through 2026, players can expect no new expansions, features, or story content going forward.
A failed experiment?
In an official statement posted on the New World website, Amazon Games said it had reached a "natural stopping point" for ongoing development. The company emphasized that it would continue to maintain the servers, address critical bugs, and provide limited technical support. However, it also made clear that major creative investment in the title was ending. According to the post, players will be given at least six months' notice before any significant service changes occur.
Industry analysts link the decision to Amazon's sweeping job cuts, which reportedly affected thousands of employees across multiple divisions, including its internal studios. The restructuring signals a shift in strategy away from high-cost, first-party MMO development, which is a notoriously expensive and resource-intensive area of gaming. While New World saw a strong launch in 2021, its player base declined sharply in subsequent years, making sustained live service content less viable.
The game's community has reacted with a mix of disappointment and resignation. Many long-time players have expressed frustration that New World’s potential as a unique, skill-based MMO was never fully realized. Others view the decision as inevitable given Amazon's recent track record in gaming. On forums and social media, fans have described the news as "the final nail in the coffin," while others have resolved to enjoy the remaining lifespan of the game before servers potentially close in 2026.
For MMO enthusiasts, the end of New World’s development leaves a noticeable gap in the market. Players looking for alternative experiences still have several thriving worlds to explore. Guild Wars 2 continues to offer deep narrative expansions with no subscription fees and its brand-new Visions of Eternity expansion has just been released. Meanwhile Final Fantasy XIV remains the gold standard for story-driven online RPGs. The Elder Scrolls Online provides a rich, open-world adventure steeped in lore, and Black Desert Online offers players a player-driven economy based on gathering and crafting. Also, World of Warcraft, with the upcoming release of Midnight, can be a viable option for those looking for a different type of MMO experience.
While New World will live on for a while longer, its fate reflects the harsh reality of modern MMOs: massive online worlds are expensive to maintain, and without sustained player engagement, even a tech giant like Amazon may struggle to justify the cost. For now, Aeternum remains open, but its days as a living, evolving world are drawing to a close. In any case, there are many alternatives available for those looking for a new home, and you can use our comparator to get any of them at the best price for your platforma of choice.
