Activision drops the ban hammer in Call of Duty: Warzone
Call of Duty: Warzone is the free-to-play battle royale that has become as popular as the main games in the Call of Duty series. Having the latest Call of Duty: Modern Warfare as a foundation, Warzone has managed to catch the attention of the fans of the series but also of quite a lot of other players, reaching unprecedented levels of popularity. Even though it was already clear that battle royale mechanics were not a bad addition to Call of Duty games as proven by the Blackout mode in Call of Duty: Black Ops IV, launching warzone as a free to play standalone game has multiplied exponentially the success of the game. Of course, Activision has tried to take advantage of the huge number of players in Call of Duty: Warzone organizing special events where they could try for a limited time some of the features included in the main games, Modern Warfare first, and Call of Duty: Black Ops - Cold War later. All of that has contributed to maintaining Call of Duty as one of the most important first-person shooting video games series.
As you can probably imagine, when a competitive multiplayer game becomes popular, it's rapidly followed by the apparition of people that try to take an unfair advantage in the game, and Call of Duty: Warzone is not the exception to the rule. In fact, the presence of cheaters has been a rising concern for the Warzone community and it seems that Activision is working hard to stop them. In a recent blog post, they confirmed that more than 300,000 people have been banned since Warzone was launched in March 2020. A total of 60,000 accounts were banned yesterday for confirmed cases of using cheat software.
This massive round of bans has probably not put an end to cheating in Warzone, but it definitely helps and proves that they do not want that the problem gets out of hand. The use of third-party software like hacks or aimbots to get better results in Warzone causes a negative impact on the gameplay experience of a majority of players that potentially could end with them abandoning the game. We have seen it happening before and it will undoubtedly happen in the future, but at least it's good to know that they are working hard so it does not happen to Call of Duty: Warzone.
