Return to the haunting world of Nosgoth in Legacy of Kain: Ascendance, a fast-paced 2D action platformer set within the dark and legendary universe of the Legacy of Kain series. Combining fluid movement, intense combat, and a dark story, the game invites players to explore a world shaped by ancient conflicts, fractured timelines, and the eternal struggle for power.

Traverse ruined cities, forgotten temples, and cursed landscapes as you battle relentless enemies and uncover secrets buried deep within Nosgoth’s history. The game blends dynamic platforming with skill-driven combat, allowing players to chain together strikes, evasive maneuvers, and supernatural abilities while navigating dangerous environments filled with traps, puzzles, and powerful foes.

Legacy of Kain: Ascendance allows players to experience the story through multiple iconic characters, each offering their own abilities, combat style, and perspective on the events unfolding across the realm. Wield the overwhelming vampiric power of Kain, witness Raziel's past before his tragic transformation, and embrace the ferocity of the vampire Elaleth as the fate of Nosgoth hangs in the balance.

The experience is brought to life through detailed pixel art, animated cutscenes, and a dark atmospheric soundtrack composed by Celldweller. Returning voice talent from the original series further enriches the narrative, delivering a new interpretation of the Legacy of Kain saga while honoring the tone and depth that made the franchise iconic.

Prepare to fight, explore, and rise through the shadows of Nosgoth in a new chapter that blends classic storytelling with modern action-platformer gameplay.

I've been eagerly awaiting this return, but Legacy of Kain: Ascendance leaves me with a taste of unfinished business. On the one hand, it's great to rediscover the unique atmosphere of Nosgoth and the Shakespearean dubbing. Artistically, it's a total success, as dark and majestic as we've come to love it. Gameplay-wise, however, the license still has one foot in the past. The camera is a purge as soon as the space is reduced, and the platforming phases are sometimes ridiculous due to a rigidity that should no longer be seen today. The system of switching between characters is a great idea on paper, but in practice, the back-and-forth in the spectral world ends up breaking the rhythm. You can also sense that the budget wasn't unlimited: the bestiary quickly goes round in circles, and some environments feel a little empty. This is a game for nostalgic fans ready to forgive some dated mechanics, but for others, the pill will be hard to swallow.

I would have liked an up-to-date sequel to this license. Legacy of Kain has never been an overpowering license, but it used to be a nice one. Today, it's a very mixed bag.

It doesn't call my attention at all. I also have all the previous games of the saga pending. Now, with the remasters, possibly I'll pass them at some point, but this game I think I'm not going to play it.

Apparently the gameplay is pretty basic: repetitive combat, decent platforming but no great depth, and it's not really a Metroidvania as advertised. It's short and uneven, but for the price, why not, I suppose, but only if you don't expect much.

I was unaware that a new game of the Legacy of Kain saga had been released and looking at the reviews I think it takes me a bit away from being able to play it.

I think it's worth paying 15€ if you're a fan of the Kain saga or Metroidvania type games, but also keep in mind that it's only a low budget game. There's not much depth to the gameplay or overall length, the art is okay, but it's not much.

Looking at the reviews, I think this game has been made by people who don't understand what made the previous Legacy of Kain games great, let alone understand what makes a game, at the very least, fun.
