Surviving Mars: Below and Beyond allows you to expand your surface colony into deep caves and lava tubes, located underground. You may choose to use existing structures or opt in for the new underground specific buildings. Build with caution, cave-ins are a thing and may ruin all your progress.
Mine your way to glory! You can now go below the surface and mine for precious resources. Help yourself by constructing special rocket propelled buildings to mine those resources. You may even use those to go on passing asteroids to gather exotic minerals and Data Samples. Be careful not to stick around for too long on those asteroids, or you will drift away.
Focus on the expansion of research trees. That will allow you to unlock additional buildings, vehicles, locales and upgrades. It will also help you unlock tunnel colonization and asteroid mining.
