Gorogoa
Gorogoa gameplay. Four hand-drawn panels. Scene of city with towers and rooftops, interior view of a door, foliage, buildings.
A four-panel image from the game Gorogoa. The panels show an eye, a room, a statue, and a cityscape, all in a unique, hand-drawn style.
Gorogoa gameplay: a butterfly, a person working on a wall, faces, and a kitchen area, all in a stylish artwork.

Gorogoa is a puzzle game unlike any other. It dares you to look at its fantastical world from a new perspective. Dealing entirely in handcrafted images, Gorogoa contains no narration, no dialogue, and no tutorials. In the game, you must guide a boy through an odd world that progressively becomes ravaged by war, as he attempts to find various treasures for a dragon-like being.

Gorogoa is a dreamlike play of scenes. Time, space, shape, and size are all relative in this world. In order to progress, you must move images around a 4-grid square. You can zoom into images to find more images and puzzles, or pan them around until you find something of interest. You can even move images on top of each other to form a new one. Once you get images just right, the magic happens. The pictures come to life, forming a scene that moves the story forward.

Winner of the Debut Game and Best Mobile Game at the 2018 BAFTA Games Awards, and the Innovation Award at the GDC 2018 Choice Awards, Gorogoa is a surreal, fascinating, and even soothing experience. You don’t feel the need to rush solving its myriad puzzles, but each time you do, the feeling is especially rewarding.

    FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

Can I directly manipulate the objects within a frame, or do I primarily interact with the frames themselves?
You primarily interact with the frames, moving, combining, or rearranging them to alter the scene.
If I combine two frames, can I separate them later, or is the combination permanent?
You can separate combined frames by reversing the action, allowing you to experiment with different arrangements.
When a frame is zoomed in, is the zoomed-in portion a completely new interactive area, or does it relate to the initial frame?
The zoomed-in portion is directly related to the initial frame, representing a closer look at the same objects and scene.
Do the frames always exist in a fixed grid, or can I arrange them freely on the screen?
The frames are generally arranged and rearranged by you, so a fixed grid is not a design constraint.
If an object appears in multiple frames, will changes to that object in one frame automatically update in the others?
Yes, changes to an object in one frame will propagate to other instances of that same object appearing in different frames.
Is the progression of the game linear, or can I explore different frame combinations simultaneously?
The game often encourages simultaneous exploration, presenting you with multiple possible frame interactions to try.
Does the game provide hints, or is the player expected to discover solutions entirely through experimentation?
The game generally provides environmental cues rather than direct hints, encouraging players to observe and experiment.
Are there any time-based mechanics in the game, or is the player free to take as long as needed to solve each puzzle?
The game does not have time-based mechanics. You are free to take as long as needed to solve the puzzles.
Can I directly interact with the background elements of a frame, or are they purely aesthetic?
While the background may appear aesthetic, it often contains clues or elements that become relevant as you manipulate the frames.
Does the game feature any dialogue or text-based instructions, or is the entire narrative conveyed through visual storytelling?
The entire narrative is conveyed through visual storytelling, with no dialogue or text-based instructions.
