Valve’s Steam Frame could cost far more than budget VR fans expected
Valve's upcoming Steam Frame VR headset could end up carrying an even steeper price tag than previously expected. According to Valve insider Tyler McVicker, the standalone headset may launch for as much as $1,500 (approximately €1,290 / £1,120), a significant jump from his earlier estimate of around $1,100.
The Steam Frame marks Valve's return to the VR market following the retirement of the Valve Index. Unlike its predecessor, the new headset is designed to function as both a standalone device and a wireless PC VR headset. It reportedly features dual 2160 × 2160 LCD displays, 16GB of LPDDR5X memory, and a dedicated 6GHz wireless adapter to reduce latency while streaming VR games from a PC. Running SteamOS natively also allows it to play a selection of Steam titles without requiring a computer.
Valve first listed the headset as "coming soon" earlier this year before confirming a summer 2026 launch window. More recently, the device passed FCC certification, suggesting an official announcement may not be far away.
Speaking during a recent livestream, McVicker said rising component costs have forced him to revise his prediction upward. He pointed to Qualcomm's recently announced chip price increase as one of the biggest factors. Since the Steam Frame is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, the double-digit price hike scheduled to take effect on September 1 could arrive just as Valve finalizes the headset's retail pricing.
The company has already faced challenges bringing new hardware to market. Its Steam Machine launched at $1,049 (€1,039 / £879), roughly $300 above Valve's original internal target, as soaring memory and component costs pushed prices beyond expectations. Reservation orders are still being fulfilled ahead of the company opening broader sales.
If McVicker's latest estimate proves accurate, the Steam Frame would become one of the most expensive mainstream VR headsets ever released. At around $1,500, it would cost considerably more than Sony's PS VR2, which debuted at $549 (€599 / £529), and would even exceed the price of Valve's highest-end Steam Machine configuration.
Valve has not announced official pricing, and McVicker's figure remains an informed estimate rather than confirmed information. Even so, with chip, memory, and storage costs continuing to climb throughout 2026, expectations for an affordable launch are fading. If the headset does arrive near the rumored price, it may appeal primarily to dedicated VR enthusiasts rather than the broader gaming audience Valve initially appeared to target.
