Legion Go and Go S are undergoing SteamOS testing before official launch
Handheld gaming on PCs is poised for significant advancement with the upcoming launch of SteamOS for devices beyond just the Steam Deck. Some early adopters have already given us a glimpse of what to expect when SteamOS officially expands its device compatibility.
While handhelds like the ASUS ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion Go are commendable gaming machines boasting robust specs and stunning displays, they all suffer from a common shortcoming. It has been argued that the reliance on Windows is the main barrier preventing these devices from reaching the same level as the Steam Deck.
YouTuber ETA Prime shared a video demonstrating how to install SteamOS on a Lenovo Legion Go S. Intriguingly, they began the installation using the Steam Deck Recovery Image. Although it was previously possible to run SteamOS on other devices through methods like Bazzite, this version is the official SteamOS 3.8.
The installation process encountered some challenges, as ETA Prime had to utilize a mouse and keyboard at one point to get the built-in controls to be recognized. However, the final outcome seemed to justify the effort, as ETA Prime noted that the Legion Go S was outperforming its performance under Windows, likely due to SteamOS's reduced processing demands compared to Windows.
Motivated by this progress, other Reddit users have seized the chance to experiment with installing SteamOS on their handhelds running Windows, including user u/Chanzellor, who showcased SteamOS working successfully on their original Legion Go.
