ASUS introduces the ROG Kithara planar magnetic gaming headset at CES

ASUS introduces ROG Kithara, a new high-fidelity planar magnetic headset

ASUS has officially unveiled the ROG Kithara, its inaugural gaming headset featuring planar magnetic drivers. This headset is part of the Republic of Gamers series and was developed in collaboration with HIFIMAN, a brand recognized for its premium planar magnetic headphones.

The ROG Kithara incorporates bespoke 100mm planar magnetic drivers specifically engineered for ROG. Unlike traditional dynamic drivers, planar magnetic drivers provide uniform movement across the entire surface, helping to minimize distortion. ASUS states that the headset offers an extensive frequency range from 8Hz to 55kHz, which should enhance bass response, improve the clarity of mids, and deliver more intricate highs, particularly during action-packed games with numerous sound effects.

Its open-back architecture permits a more natural sound flow. This design contributes to a broader soundstage and enhanced separation of individual sounds. In a gaming context, this can heighten spatial awareness, making it easier to pinpoint the origin of in-game sounds like footsteps or gunfire.

For voice communication, the headset is equipped with an on-cable full-band MEMS boom microphone. It supports an expansive frequency range of 20Hz to 20kHz, exceeding the range of most standard gaming microphones. ASUS has also distinctively separated the audio and microphone signal paths within the cable to minimize crosstalk.

The ROG Kithara is supplied with a high-quality cable that features interchangeable plugs. Users will receive a 4.4mm balanced plug suitable for DACs and amplifiers, alongside 3.5mm and 6.3mm single-ended plugs for PCs, gaming consoles, and other devices. ASUS also includes a USB-C to dual 3.5mm adapter for laptops and mobile gadgets.

ROG Kithara gaming headset, a Nintendo Switch, a PS5, and a controller are on a dark surface.

The headset boasts a metal frame and a durable hinge design. The adjustable headband is crafted to accommodate various head sizes, while memory foam cushioning helps alleviate pressure during extended use. ASUS is offering several earcup choices, including leatherette, fabric, and velour, allowing users to select their preferred comfort level. The open-back design also enhances airflow, which can provide greater comfort for prolonged wear.

Recent information indicates that the ROG Kithara will retail for under $400, with an anticipated price of approximately $359.
