ASUS unveils 240Hz Micro-OLED virtual display tech with ROG XREAL R1

ASUS debuts world’s first 240Hz Micro-OLED virtual display in ROG XREAL R1

Launching at CES 2026, ASUS officially unveiled the ROG XREAL R1 AR, an augmented reality (AR) headset for gamers, developed in partnership with XREAL. Instead of a traditional large-format gaming monitor, ASUS opted for a different approach: bringing the "Big Format Gaming Display" experience to a wearable device.

The ROG XREAL R1 is the world's first gaming headset to use a 240Hz Micro-OLED panel with Full HD resolution (1,920 x 1,080). According to ASUS, the device can create a virtual screen up to 171 inches in size at a distance of 4 meters, with a 57-degree field of view, covering about 95% of the user's central field of vision. Besides display capabilities, ASUS also heavily invested in the audio experience. The ROG XREAL R1 integrates a sound system tuned by Bose, creating a 3D audio space to enhance immersion during gaming or entertainment.

Another notable feature is the electrochromic lens technology. The lenses can automatically adjust their transparency based on lighting conditions and the user's line of sight. When the user focuses on the virtual screen, the lenses darken to increase contrast; when looking at the surrounding environment, the lenses become more transparent. Users can also manually adjust the level of tinting according to their needs.

Accompanying the headset is the ROG Control Dock, which acts as a connection hub. This dock supports DisplayPort 1.4 and HDMI 2.0, allowing quick switching between PC and console with a single action. The ROG XREAL R1 is also compatible with the ROG Ally, connecting via the USB-C port to provide a large-screen virtual display handheld gaming experience.

ASUS has not yet announced the price of the ROG XREAL R1 AR, but confirmed the product will be available for sale in the first half of 2026. With 240Hz specs, Micro-OLED, and a virtual display space up to 171 inches, this is considered one of the most notable AR products at this year's CES, especially for gamers and users who love new display experiences.

Conversely, if you’re looking for a handheld device that is well-established, finely tuned for top-tier performance, and crafted for serious gaming on the go, the ROG Ally emerges as an exceptional choice. With its long-lasting battery life, enhanced ergonomics, and complete Windows functionality, it exemplifies the aspirations for future handheld gaming.
