dbrand’s Steam Machine Companion Cube case pulled after Valve warning

Hype surrounding Valve's Steam Machine inspired plenty of creative ideas, but one of the most eye-catching accessories has now been canceled before it ever reached customers. Accessory maker dbrand spent seven months developing a replacement shell that transformed Valve's compact gaming system into Portal's iconic Companion Cube, only for Valve to shut the project down over intellectual property concerns.

Following the Steam Machine's reveal, fans jokingly dubbed the console the "Gabecube." dbrand leaned into the joke by designing a replacement shell that closely resembled the Companion Cube from the Portal series. The company developed the product without first obtaining Valve's permission, hoping to secure a license later.

That plan didn't work. dbrand explained in the post on r/dbrand on Reddit that after the accessory was unveiled, Valve's legal team contacted dbrand, explaining that the Companion Cube is protected intellectual property and cannot be used commercially without a license. As a result, dbrand immediately removed the product from sale and confirmed that all pre-orders will receive full refunds.

The company also revealed that it attempted to salvage the project by asking Valve if it could continue production under an official licensing agreement. Valve declined, bringing development to an end. 

According to dbrand, the cancellation represents a significant investment lost. The company says it spent more than 1,000 hours engineering the shell and produced four sets of injection molds before learning it could not legally sell the product. Despite the outcome, dbrand praised Valve's handling of the situation, describing the company as "direct, fair, and respectful throughout" while acknowledging that Valve was fully within its rights.

To promote the case, dbrand even created a cinematic trailer filled with Valve references, including what appeared to be a playful Half-Life 3 joke. Although the official trailer has been made private, archived versions are still available online, including one linked here for those interested in seeing the product in action.

Ironically, the canceled accessory proved incredibly popular. According to dbrand, the Companion Cube shell became the second fastest-selling product in the company's history, surpassed only by its Nintendo Switch 2 "Killswitch" case.

The situation is a reminder that even highly successful fan-inspired products still require permission when they rely on protected intellectual property. While the Companion Cube Steam Machine case generated enormous excitement, it couldn't move forward without Valve's approval, making this an expensive lesson in licensing.
